Following the hardship, currently witness in the country, due to the scarcity of naira, caused by the poor implementation of the new naira redesign by the Central Bank of Nigeria, The governor of Ogun state Dapo Abiodun, suffered a terrible humiliation during one of his campaign rallies in Abeokuta, the Capital City of the State, on Wednesday February 22, 2023.
The governor, who is seeking re-election for his second tenure, under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, went round the town to canvas for vote but, the angry residents, who have been badly affected by the current economic trouble did not allow him to talk, despite all his pleading.
While pleading with the crowd, Abiodun noted that the CBN is the cause of the current situation and he has also been trying to make that the issue get resolved as soon as possible but the angry crowd did not listen to his plea, instead, they continue hurling insult on him.
The issue of the naira scarcity started as a result of the poor implementation of the new naira redesign by the CBN, which some State governors, in solidarity with the masses, have approached the Supreme Court, to stop the administration of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) from the full implementation of the policy.
However, the court has given an interim order that all the old and new redesigned notes should remain in circulation, as legal tender pending the hearing of the suit, initially filed by three state government; Kogi, Kaduna and Zamfara state government respectfully.
However, nine other states joined the suite to challenge the federal government and the CBN, but the hearing of the suit was earlier adjourned till February 22, 2023, to allow the court, consolidate all cases on the matter, emanating from other nine state.
Meanwhile, despite the interim order of the court, President Buhari in his last national broadcast had instructed the CBN to circulate the old N200 note till April while N500 and N1000 notes should be take away from circulation, as they have seized to be legal tender, the order which is against the court’s order that says N200, N500 and N1000 notes should remain legal tender till April this year.
In consequent to the order given by Mr President, some State governors, which Dapo Abiodun was part of, directed that all the tree old notes remain legal tender in their states and all the banks their states were warned to comply with the order or risk their Certificate of Occupancy and the ownership of the land in which their facility were erected.
However, the supreme court during its sitting today has re-adjourned the hearing of the suite till March 3rd, after the coming presidential election in the country.
Unfortunately, despite all Governor Abiodun’s efforts to fight the federal government because of the policy and his order to make the old notes remain in circulation, pending the court judgement on matter, he was not allowed to speak to the angry residents.
