Vietnam’s parliament has appointed General Luong Cuong as the country’s new president, marking the fourth person to hold the position in less than two years.
The president’s role in Vietnam is mostly ceremonial, including duties such as meeting with foreign leaders.
All 440 deputies in the National Assembly voted unanimously to approve Cuong’s appointment during their autumn session in Hanoi on Monday, October 21, 2024.
Cuong replaces To Lam, who had been holding both the positions of president and general secretary of the Communist Party. To Lam remains Vietnam’s most powerful figure as the party’s general secretary, a role that oversees the country’s leadership.
Vietnam has been undergoing leadership changes tied to a major anti-corruption campaign, which has contributed to the frequent turnover in the president’s office.
