Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, recently drew a stark comparison between the ill-fated Titanic and the current situation in Nigeria.
In an interview with Arise News during the celebration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, Obi, who previously served as the Governor of Anambra State, highlighted his concerns about the nation’s leadership and direction.
Democracy Day marks Nigeria’s 25th year of practicing democracy, a milestone that prompted reflection on the country’s progress and challenges. In his remarks, Obi criticized Nigerian leaders for their extravagant lifestyles, suggesting they are out of touch with the struggles faced by ordinary citizens.
He explained, “You’re supposed to show a clear plan, it is not enough to say we’re going to go through problems. If we’re going to go through problems, this is very simple.” Obi elaborated on this analogy by stating, “I always say what happened to the Titanic is what is happening in Nigeria. While it was going down, people on the upper deck were busy dancing until the whole thing collapsed, that’s what is happening now.”
Obi’s comments underline his belief that Nigerian leaders are neglecting the nation’s pressing issues, akin to the passengers on the Titanic who continued to celebrate despite the impending disaster. He urged for a change in approach, advocating for effective management and a crackdown on corruption, emphasizing, “We should change and do things rightly. We can change and manage corruption and everything and all that.”
