Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, has shed light on the driving force behind his extensive contributions to education, healthcare, and empowerment initiatives.
During a visit to the Anglican Bishop of Nnewi, Rt. Rev. Ndubisi Obi, Mr Obi addressed questions from journalists regarding his decision to commit over ₦1.5 billion to humanitarian causes in 2024. He emphasised that his philanthropy is not about self-promotion but stems from a profound concern for humanity.
Citing examples of his recent contributions, Obi highlighted his donations of ₦10 million to Bishop Ephraim Ikeakor for the College of Nursing Sciences, Amichi, and another ₦10 million to Bishop Ndubisi Obi for ongoing projects at ADON College of Health Technology, Nnewi. He explained that such acts inspire him to continue giving because of the tangible impact they have on people’s lives.
“Even before my public life, I have always derived satisfaction from contributing to worthy causes that uplift humanity. For instance, I was in Haiti after the earthquake, where I contributed to its rebuilding. Similarly, even before I became Governor, I had extended help to places in need according to my capacity,” Obi said.
Obi also recounted his visits with Bishop Ndubisi to facilities such as the Diocesan Rehabilitation Centre for victims of drug abuse and a school for children with special needs. He expressed deep admiration for the Bishop’s dedication to helping the vulnerable, describing it as an inspiration to contribute.
“When you witness such dedication to humanity, it is impossible not to contribute – not for personal recognition, but for the sake of humanity,” Obi remarked.
When asked if his philanthropic efforts were aimed at bolstering his public image, Obi dismissed the idea, stressing that giving back is a moral and spiritual obligation rather than a strategy for self-promotion.
“Giving back to society is my way of fulfilling not only my moral and spiritual obligations but also my duty to the society that nurtured me,” he said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to continuing these efforts, stating, “As long as God grants me the resources, I will keep contributing to causes that uplift humanity.”
Mr Obi’s contributions, which span education, healthcare, and social empowerment, have become a hallmark of his public and private life. His efforts, rooted in a desire to make meaningful changes, demonstrate his belief in humanity’s collective responsibility to uplift the less privileged.
