Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed reason for naming a highway after the Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka.
The former Rivers State governor made the announcement during the commissioning of the newly completed Arterial Road N20, now known as Wole Soyinka Way.
Wike praised Soyinka’s achievements, stating that the naming is a tribute to his contributions to Nigerian literature and his status as the country’s only Nobel Laureate, according to Daily Post.
The minister expressed hope that this recognition will inspire others to strive for excellence.
The road project, awarded in 2020 at a cost of N30.6 billion, has brought relief to FCT residents and enhanced the capital city’s infrastructure.
President Bola Tinubu commissioned the project on Tuesday, underscoring the government’s commitment to development and honoring national heroes.
He stated that “the proposal to dedicate the road to Prof. Wole Soyinka is rooted in the importance of honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to progress and development during their lifetime, thus setting an example for others.”
The Minister also thanked the contractor for ensuring the timely completion of the road project.
In her remarks, the Minister of State, FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud also thanked President Tinubu, the leadership of the National Assembly and members of the Federal Executive Council for their support to the FCT Administration.
The Minister of State also extended appreciation to other stakeholders, including the FCDA engineers and the construction team who contributed their expertise to make the Arterial Road N20 a reality.
She said the construction of the arterial in the FCT has created a safer, more efficient, and more sustainable transportation network that benefits everyone in the capital city.
