The Yobe State House of Assembly has made significant amendments to the law establishing the Hisbah Commission, separating the functions of the office of the Executive Chairman and State Commandant of the Commission.
This decision was reached following the adoption of the report presented by the standing committee on Justice and Religious Affairs regarding the amendment law.
Chairman of the committee, Hon Yakubu Suleiman, shed more light on the amendment, stating that the revised law now clearly defines the functions of the office of the State Commandant of the Hisbah Commission.
According to the lawmaker, the amended provisions stipulate that the State Hisba Commandant will operate under the directives of the Executive Chairman in overseeing the activities of the Hisba Corps.
Highlighting the importance of the amendment, the committee chairman emphasized that it would greatly enhance the Commission’s effectiveness in carrying out its duties.
In a related development, the House received the names of four nominees for confirmation as Executive Chairman and permanent members of the Hisba Commission.
The nominees are Yahuza Hamza Abubakar for the position of Executive Chairman, while Sheikh Mohammed Mahdi, Alkasim A Damagum, and Mallam Lawan Abba Shettima have been nominated as permanent members of the Commission.
Presiding over the session, the Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Chiroma Buba Mashio, referred the nominees’ names to the House committee on Justice and Religious Affairs for screening.
It is worth noting that Governor Buni signed a bill into law on October 6, 2023, establishing the Hisba Commission. The Commission’s mandate includes monitoring the enforcement and implementation of Shariah law and preventing other social vices in the state.
