The former first lady of Zambia, Esther Lungu, and her daughter, Chiyeso Katete, have been arrested by the Drug Enforcement Commission over their ownership of properties worth over $2 million suspected to be proceeds of crime.
The properties in question include 15 apartments worth $1.5 million, which Esther Lungu could not provide a reasonable explanation for how she acquired.
Katete and family friend Charles Phiri are also accused of having properties worth over $570,000 suspected to be proceeds of crime, according to AP.
Another daughter of Edgar and Esther Lungu is facing related charges and has been ordered to hand herself in to authorities by Monday.
This development comes as Edgar Lungu, who was Zambia’s president from 2015 to 2021, is attempting a political comeback and plans to run against current President Hakainde Hichilema in the 2026 presidential election.
The DEC’s action is seen as a significant move in tackling corruption and illicit activities in Zambia’s political circles.
