The speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Moriki, had been impeached, and Bashar Gummi named the acting Speaker.
This follows a proposal made by a member representing the Maru Constituency, Nasiru Abdullahi, and supported by 18 of the 24 members.
During an emergency meeting on Thursday night, all 24 members, 18 of them, unanimously decided to impeach the speaker.
Members claim that the Speaker was placed on leave because of state-wide security threats, despite the House making no effort to halt the threat.
One of the members, Shamsudeen Basko, representing Talata Mafara Constituency, told the pro-temporal Speaker that the issue of insecurity was one of the key issues to be given top priority which led to the suspension of the former speaker.
Basco said, “I have two issues, but an observation was made on one, which is that of insecurity which has been disturbing our people. Our people are being killed and abducted on a daily basis”.
