Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has approved the disbursement of N1 billion in grants to 9,403 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in Biu and Hawul Local Government Areas as part of his administration’s economic empowerment initiatives.
The grants will be distributed under the state government’s programme aimed at stimulating local businesses, reducing poverty, and creating employment opportunities.
Speaking at the inauguration of the disbursement exercise on Tuesday in Biu, Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering SMEs as a key strategy for economic growth and youth engagement.
He explained that N560.3 million would be allocated to 5,603 entrepreneurs in Biu, while N439.7 million would be given to 2,000 businesses in Hawul. Additionally, 1,800 youths and vulnerable families are set to benefit from the initiative.
“We are committed to supporting small businesses and young entrepreneurs to build a strong economic foundation in Borno State. This is in fulfillment of our campaign promises,” Zulum said.
The governor urged beneficiaries to invest the funds wisely and directed the Borno State Social Investment Management Programme to identify an additional 2,000 vulnerable youths for the next phase of the scheme.
In addition to the economic support initiative, Zulum also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of 600 housing units in five locations across the state to accommodate teachers and health workers.
“Some 100 housing units will be built in Biu, Magumeri, Hawul, and Gubio for teachers. 200 houses will be constructed at the Borno State University Teaching Hospital for health workers,” he said.
According to the governor, the housing estate will include a clinic, roads, drainage systems, sporting centres, and other essential social amenities.
Zulum further reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants, particularly teachers and healthcare workers, to enhance service delivery across the state.
