The Labour Party’s National Working Committee, led by Julius Abure, is said to have officially reached the end of its tenure, which concluded on June 10, 2024.
In a move to ensure continuity, the party’s stakeholders gathered in Abia State on Wednesday to establish a 29-member caretaker committee, headed by Nenadi Usman.
The committee’s primary objective is to oversee the party’s operations temporarily and organize congresses and conventions at various levels, in accordance with the party’s constitution, according to Daily Post.
However, Abure has dismissed the caretaker committee, deeming the stakeholders’ meeting illegal and unconstitutional. The development has sparked a leadership controversy within the party.
The caretaker committee comprises representatives from various interests, including the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, Senate, House of Representatives, House of Assembly, and gubernatorial candidates from the last election.
The party’s stakeholders have urged all members to support the caretaker committee in achieving its mandate, despite the controversy surrounding its formation.
It said, “tenure of the members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party ended by effusion of time on the 10th of June, 2024. There is a need to ensure that there is no vacuum in the NWC of the party.”
It mandated the committee “to immediately ensure that the ward, local government, state and National congresses and conventions of the Labour Party are held as soon as possible in accordance with the constitution of the Labour Party”.
