President of Nigeria’s Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, recently praised the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies likening it to prestigious institutions like Cambridge and Harvard Universities.
Akpabio made this comparison during a visit to the Institute’s permanent site in Abuja, highlighting the high-quality infrastructure and conducive learning environment that NILDS provides, similar to what is found in top-rated universities worldwide.
Akpabio stated, “The Institute’s impressive facilities, vision and focus, make it a very significant potential contributor to Nigerian democracy. With this infrastructure, Nigerians no longer need to travel overseas for legislative training. This is our own Cambridge and Harvard.”
Accompanying Akpabio on the visit were Senate leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Senate Minority Whip Senator Osita Ngwu, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, and Senator Adetokunbo Abiru. During the event, NILDS’ Director General, Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, unveiled the Institute’s latest publication titled “25 Years of Democracy and Development in Nigeria,” featuring a foreword by Senator Akpabio. The publication chronicles Nigeria’s democratic journey and development since 1999.
In related news, the Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States Parliament, Rt. Hon. Maimounatou Ibrahima, visited NILDS to seek the Institute’s assistance in enhancing the capacity of parliamentarians and their support staff. Professor Sulaiman assured her of NILDS’ readiness to provide its services to the ECOWAS Parliament, emphasizing the Institute’s commitment to the advancement and overall well-being of the sub-region.
