The Conference of United Political Parties has expressed concerns that the ongoing feud between Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP-Kogi) and Senate President Godswill Akpabio could result in a significant loss of public confidence in the National Assembly.
The National Secretary of CUPP, Mr. Peter Ameh, raised these concerns during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, describing the situation as worrisome.
Ameh emphasized that the feud could undermine public trust in the Senate and the entire National Assembly.
On February 20, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused the Senate President of reallocating her seat in the upper chamber without her knowledge. This claim sparked tensions between the two lawmakers, prompting the Senate to refer the matter to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for investigation and possible disciplinary action against Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The issue has continued to attract attention, with political stakeholders and the public expressing concern over the situation. Ameh, commenting on the ongoing feud, warned that if left unresolved, it could have far-reaching consequences for Nigeria’s governance and the stability of its democratic institutions.
“The implications of repeated allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio are severe. They could have significant consequences, not only for the individual involved but also for the Senate and the entire National Assembly,” Ameh stated.
Ameh further addressed the allegations of sexual harassment made against Akpabio, stressing that such claims could damage the Senate’s credibility and negatively impact its legislative functions. He highlighted that sexual harassment undermines professionalism, equity, and efficiency within a prestigious institution and perpetuates gender inequality, which stifles progress.
He also pointed out that allegations targeting female senators are particularly harmful, as they signal a failure to uphold respect and meritocracy within the Senate. Ameh argued that such actions could discourage capable women from pursuing political careers, further eroding public trust in the Senate’s leadership and decision-making processes.
The CUPP National Secretary called for a comprehensive approach to address the issue, urging strong actions to prevent similar incidents in the future. He advocated for accountability and a cultural shift to ensure equal opportunities for all members, regardless of gender or position.
