Former US President Donald Trump has made a defiant vow to “never surrender” after another assassination attempt targeted him on Sunday at his golf course near West Palm Beach, where gunshots were fired while he was present.
According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the incident was a failed assassination attempt.
Secret Service agents spotted the barrel of a rifle poking through some bushes and opened fire at him, officials said. The FBI said Trump was 300-500 yards (275 to 455m) away at the time.
An AK47-style firearm and scope, along with two backpacks and a GoPro camera, were later found at the scene
The suspect fled in a car and was detained after being stopped on the highway.
The person detained is Ryan Wesley Routh, according to three law enforcement sources. Routh, who owns a small construction company in Hawaii, had criticized Trump on social media.
Fortunately, Trump’s team quickly sent out an alert confirming that the Republican candidate is “safe and well”.
In the alert, Trump personally reassured his supporters, saying: “There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I am safe and well. Nothing will slow me down. I will never surrender.”
This latest incident comes on the heels of a previous attempt on Trump’s life, which occurred just months ago when he was shot in the ear.
Despite these attempts, Trump remains resolute and determined to move forward.
Trump is set to continue his presidential campaign, with his resolve unshaken by these events.
