The Arewa Youth Movement, comprising young Nigerians from the northern region, has voiced strong backing for the proposed tax reform bill by the Federal Government, stating that it will enhance Nigeria’s fiscal framework and open up avenues for economic advancement, particularly in the North.
President of the Arewa Youth Movement, Sa’ad Muhammad, emphasized the benefits of the bill for the region, stating that it would boost revenue generation, facilitate infrastructural development, and combat poverty and inequality.
During a press briefing in Abuja, Muhammad articulated how the bill could positively impact Northern states, enabling them to allocate a larger portion of their internally generated revenue towards critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and healthcare facilities. He stressed that the bill would also foster a more conducive business environment, attracting investments and bolstering the region’s economic competitiveness.
Highlighting the broader national advantages, the group underscored that the tax reform would expand the tax base, lower rates, and enhance compliance, ultimately bolstering government revenue for funding infrastructure projects, social welfare initiatives, and human capital development. Additionally, they posited that the bill could aid in diversifying Nigeria’s economy away from oil dependency, driving growth in agriculture, manufacturing, and services.
Despite reservations expressed by Northern elites, the Arewa Youths dismissed these concerns, urging the National Assembly to swiftly pass the bill to reap its benefits. They believe that the reform is imperative for promoting inclusive growth and securing a sustainable economic future for all Nigerians, especially those in the North.
In his statements, Muhammad expressed unwavering support for the tax reform bill, stressing its importance for the Northern region’s economic progression. He noted, “The tax reform bill is particularly significant for the Northern region, promoting economic development, job creation, and increased revenue generation.”
He went on to say, “By fostering economic growth, the tax reform bill will aid in reducing poverty and inequality in the Northern region, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We urge the National Assembly to expedite the bill’s passage for the benefit of all Nigerians, especially those in the North.”
Concluding, Muhammad remarked, “We are confident that this legislation holds the potential to revolutionize Nigeria’s economy, driving sustainable growth and ensuring a promising future for all citizens.”
